Welcome to Optimal Hockey Coaching, where passion meets performance! Located in the heart of Scotland’s capital, our camps and academies are dedicated to developing the skills, techniques, and strategic thinking necessary to excel in field hockey. Designed for players who are passionate about field hockey and are driven to elevate their skills to the highest level.

Director of Coaching

Dan Coultas

Dan Coultas is a former Great Britain and current Scotland hockey player, boasting an impressive 80 combined caps for Great Britain and Scotland, with over 40 goals to his name.

He has represented Scotland on the international stage, competing in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, two European Championships, two World League Tournaments, and one Champions Challenge Tournament. Dan also holds the Scottish record for the most goals scored by a single player in an international match, netting five goals against South Africa.

In his current roles, Dan serves as the Hockey Coach for George Watson's College Boys 1st XI as well as Watsonians Mens 1st XI hockey team. He is also the Head of Strength & Conditioning for all sports at George Watson's College.

Emmie Coultas

Emmie plays a vital role behind the scenes at Optimal Hockey, managing everything from replying to emails to organising camps and handling administrative tasks. With a strong hockey background, she was the vice-captain the First XI at Grange and has coached both the U16 girls and Balerno First XI girls. Her extensive experience in coaching has honed her exceptional organisational skills, ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Emmie's dedication and expertise significantly contribute to the success of the program.

Hockey Coach and Goalkeeper Specialist

Craig Yelland

Meet Craig, our dedicated goalie coach for the hockey camp. With extensive experience in the Scotland senior development program and as a former Scotland U18 and U21 goalkeeper, he brings a wealth of knowledge to our sessions. Currently serving as the 1st XI goalkeeper for Watsonians Hockey Club and the head goalkeeper coach at Watsonians Youth Hockey Club, Craig committed to helping you elevate your game. Join us to from one of the best in the field!

Euan Burgess

Meet our dedicated coach, Euan.  He is currently part of the Scotland senior squad. With a background as a former U21 international, they bring a wealth of experience to the team. Known for their exceptional ball-carrying abilities and impressive elimination skills, he is committed to developing players and enhancing team performance. His passion for the game and insights make him an invaluable asset to our coaching staff.

Where will the sessions take place?

Our camps are held at Meggetland or Peffermill Playing Fields in the Muga next to Pitch 2.

What are the start and end times?

Elite Camps and Essential Camps run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drop-off begins at 9:30 a.m.

What equipment do I need to bring?

All children attending must bring their own hockey stick, shin pads, mouthguard, left-hand glove (if applicable), and appropriate footwear and clothing.

All participants in our sessions are required to wear shin pads and mouthguards. Without the proper protective equipment, your child will not be permitted to participate in game play.
Goalkeepers are required to provide their own goalkeeping equipment.

What food do I need?

For our camps, please ensure your child brings a packed lunch, snacks, and a refillable water bottle.

Who are the coaches?

All of our camps are designed, planned, and managed by our Director of Coaching, Dan Coultas, who is currently an International player and Scottish Premiership Coach.
